Cape Town is living classroom with a rich and inspirational history as well as vibrant examples of leaders creating positive change.  Students will learn about the history of South Africa and the legacy of apartheid as a way to better understand the current social situation in the townships of Cape Town.  , it’s important to learn about and appreciate the local culture. By participating in thought-provoking discussions, led by knowledgeable Mentors, and hearing from dynamic local leaders, students gain a deeper of the country and its culture.


Some examples of learning in Cape Town are:

  • Visiting Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned
  • Learn basic phrases in the Xhosa and Afrikaans languages
  • Experience District Six, where thousands of black and colored inhabitants were forcibly removed during Apartheid
  • Meeting inspirational leaders of non-profit and non-governmental organizations such as a women's group that makes handicrafts out of dried tea bags
  • Creating your own rhythms at an African percussion workshop
