"The community service took my heart. Working with the kids was the best experience of my life. I loved knowing I made the kids day, just by spending a little bit of my time with them, brought smiles to their faces… I loved this whole experience"

The GLA Experience is about creating leaders.
As a volunteer with GLA in Cape Town, you‘ll be part of projects that are transforming communities. You'll see how your smile, spirit and hope can have a positive effect. Small groups break off to engage in meaningful interactions with local citizens. You’ll complete approximately 40 hours of community service during your trip.
Service in South Africa:
Apartheid has left many in need of assistance. Although racial segregation is no longer mandated by the government, its legacy exists in various townships. HIV/AIDS more recently has afflicted both rural and urban South Africans. Support organizations facing these issues while learning first hand about them.
Last year’s projects:
GLA helped out at Baphumelele Orphanage, The Amy Biehl Foundation, Khumbalani Daycare Center and Hector Pieterson School. Each organization appreciated the level of enthusiasm, dedication and fun that our students had:
- Working alongside township teenagers in developing murals with messages of hope on local community centers
- Providing nurturing care and much needed loving attention to infants and toddlers affected or infected by HIV/AIDS
- Teaching high school students critical computer skills
- Restoring a township community center, which will be used to provide health information to locals
GLA alumni overwhelmingly tell us that they never could have predicted how much they gained from the community service portion of their program. Apply now for your opportunity to experience service-learning.
