South Africa
Global Leadership Adventures offers two flagship programs in South Africa, one of the most dynamic places on the African continent. The breathtaking natural beauty, recent abolition of apartheid and the subsequent attempts at reconciliation make this country an exciting classroom for students to learn first-hand about vital social issues and also to make a difference. Against this backdrop of magnificent sites, South Africa is a dynamic nation to be experienced. The country is home to a rich colonial past, historic apartheid struggles and exciting economic rebirth.
These two programs can be linked together to provide students the opportunity to experience both of South Africa's most important cities
Cape Town: One City, Two Worlds (3 weeks)
Our flagship program that we started in 2004 allows students to live in one of the most beautiful cities in Africa and volunteer in the townships where the legacy of apartheid is apparent in the stark economic poverty juxtaposed with the sophisticated style of the city of Cape Town. Besides community service, you will cycle around the Cape of Good Hope, visit the penguins at a coastal sanctuary, climb Table Mountain and visit the prison where Nelson Mandela was held captive during the struggle against apartheid.
Johannesburg: Birth of a Nation (2 weeks)
This intense program focuses on learning about the struggle against apartheid and the recent development of the "rainbow nation". You will visit the Apartheid Museum, Nelson Mandela's home and volunteer for a few days in Soweto, home of the famous uprisings against the old racist regime. In addition, you will travel outside the city to visit The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also view lions, elephants and other wildlife on a day-long safari at a nearby wildlife reserve.
